Bringing together women of all ages and from all walks of life.
In our everyday conversations, we often use the expression ‘achi sohbat’, which means good company.
“It is a familiar phrase, but one that carries a meaning we hold close: the people we spend time with shape us, teach us and become part of our lives.”
Sohbat Community began with the idea of creating a space where women in Bandpur could come together, connect, learn, share their experiences, and take an active part in one another’s lives.
A welcoming room for every voice — regardless of their age, profession, responsibilities, or personal circumstances.
The idea of community is not new to us. It has always been part of our history and, as Muslims, we have a long tradition of gathering, learning and looking after one another.
We believe Muslim women need spaces for sisterhood, where they can build friendships, exchange knowledge, ask questions and grow together. Sohbat is an effort to make room for that in our own town.
We want Sohbat to be a living space for learning, participation, and meaningful interaction.
Deen at the Center
Deen is at the heart of what we are building at Sohbat. We want to create opportunities for Muslim women to learn about Tawheed, the Quran, Hadith and the practice of Islam in everyday life.
Before we pass knowledge on to the next generation, we make the effort to educate ourselves, strengthen understanding and keep asking questions with humility.
Kaeshir Zabaan
Keeping our language and literature alive is central to our purpose. We are committed to making Kaeshir zabaan an active part of everyday lives, particularly for younger generations.
Encouraging young women to speak, read, and write in Kaeshur, feeling deeply anchored in the rich heritage and literature they have inherited.
Bandpur’s Women Pioneers
An important part of our mission is documenting Bandpur’s history and recognising the contributions women have made across diverse fields.
So much of this history lives only in personal accounts, memories, and stories rarely recorded. We make a conscious, caring effort to preserve it.
Bringing reading, ilm (knowledge) and adab (literature) back into our lives.
Gaash Book Club was started with the intention of bringing reading back into our everyday lives and creating a welcoming space for readers and writers to meet, exchange ideas, and talk about literature.
Our sessions revolve around different books, themes, and subjects. We read, discuss, share our interpretations, and listen to one another.
The aim is not simply to finish a book or arrive at a single conclusion. It is to make intentional time for reading, become more thoughtful readers, and learn from each other’s unique perspectives.
A Haven for Writers:Gaash is also intended to be a nurturing space where both seasoned and aspiring writers can share, read, and discuss their work freely.
Our land has long been associated with ilm (knowledge) and adab (literature). These are parts of our cultural life that people often speak of as having faded over the years. Through Sohbat and Gaash, we hope to renew our connection with both, in our own way and at our own pace.
We hope to launch an annual literary magazine dedicated to the women of Bandpur — bringing together poetry, photography, essays, and creative works by local women.
It is a long-term project with much work ahead before it becomes a reality. But it is something we would love to see take shape, inshaAllah.
That is the kind of community we nurture through Sohbat: one where women can depend on one another without hesitation, celebrate each other’s progress, learn together, and make room for each other’s lives and experiences.
Sohbat is still growing, and many of the things we hope to do will take time, effort, and the support of our community. We don’t claim to have it all figured out. We are learning as we go, taking one step at a time and hoping to make something worthwhile for the women of Bandpur.
Achi sohbat, always. 💛
